Minnesota's 'Arrowhead' is definitely the center of the universe for canoeing! The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), a million-square-mile expanse of lake and forest wilderness - is just a short drive from Cascade Lodge. Outside of the BWCAW are millions more square miles of excellent canoeing.
The canoe is an integral part of our area's heritage. Early explorers all travelled by canoe, and the "Voyageurs' Highway" was a well-travelled route that 17th-century fur traders used to haul furs to Montreal and trade goods inland (the "Great Carrying Place", Grand Portage, about an hour's drive Northeast of Cascade Lodge, was an important link in the fur trade and has a restored outpost/depot that is well worth a visit).
Cascade Lodge can be your base camp while you explore the wilderness, with a hot shower and a great meal to look forward to after your BWCAW expedition. We can also set you up with a day trip inside the BWCAW in association with Sawbill Canoe Outfitters, or at one of many local lakes with our own canoes.
